Cuzzin's Closes in Orland Park

Cuzzin's closed last month in Orland Park.

By Bob Bong
Southland Savvy

Cuzzin’s restaurant at 8600 W. 159th St. in Orland Park closed a few weeks ago after being sold to new owners, according to its former owners on their Danny’s Catering Facebook page.

Cuzzin’s website says, “Our Orland Park location Cuzzin's/Cugino's is now closed. Please visit Danny’s in Melrose.

A message on Danny’s Facebook page posted on Nov. 19 says, “We want to let all our friends and fans know that we have sold our Orland Park location. For those of you on the south side I promise coming to
Danny’s in Melrose Park for dinner or your catering needs will be worth the ride. Stay in touch with this page for upcoming events and specials. Hope to see you soon, Paula Dote.”

Calls to Dote were not returned. There is no word on who bought the restaurant or when it may reopen.

Kmart to close on 159th Street

The Kmart store at 159th Street and Bell Road in Homer Glen will close by the end of January and has started a store closing sale.

The store, which opened in 1981, was converted from a Kmart to a Sears Essential store after the merger of Kmart and Sears in 2005, but the concept never really caught on and the store was reconverted back to a Kmart about 18 months ago.

The store has 82 employees, some of whom may be able to transfer to other Sears or Kmart locations.

Moon’s Burgers Closes

Tony Gambino III has apparently given up on trying to make a go of a restaurant at 3342 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park.

Gambino first tried it with one of his Taco Fresco franchises, which have been successful elsewhere in the Chicago area but didn’t catch on in Evergreen Park or Tinley Park.

About a year ago, he borrowed a page from his family’s successful Moon’s Sandwich Shop at 16 S. Western Ave. and opened Tony Moon’s Burgers, which got generally good grades from online reviewers.

But Moon’s Burgers closed abruptly at the beginning of November. The phone number has been disconnected and the shop has a “for rent” sign in the window.

Palos Heights McDonald’s open again

Palos area Big Mac fans can rejoice, the fast-food icon has reopened the Golden Arches at 7100 W. 127th St.  The restaurant, which was closed and torn down in August, reopened earlier this month after being rebuilt.

Famous Dave’s BBQ to open today in Evergreen Park

By Bob Bong
Southland Savvy

Famous Dave’s barbecue is trying a new concept with the restaurant it is opening today at 2851 W. 95th St. in Evergreen Park.

“It will be 3,600 square feet with seating for 104,” said manager Andre Pleasance. The eatery will be the chain’s eighth location in the Chicago area, all of them corporate owned.

“That’s about half the size of a traditional Famous Dave’s,” he said. “It will be the first counter service Famous Dave’s in Chicago.”

Customers will place their order and get a number for their table and the food will be brought out. Famous Dave’s other Chicago-area locations are full service.

Pleasance said the Minnesota-based chain is testing the smaller concept in Evergreen Park, and, if successful, may use it in other urban areas.

“The closer you get to the city, the more carryout and delivery orders you get and fewer dine-in customers,” he said.

Though it may be smaller, the restaurant will feature Famous Dave’s customer service, Pleasance said.
“We are so over the top for service,” he said. “We should do well with our customers who will not be treated better anywhere else.”

The restaurant will start out with a staff of 60-70 employees and a limited delivery area for local businesses.
“We’ll deliver locally to businesses at first,” he said anticipating delivery to residences to start in January.
Pleasance said the Evergreen location will open at 11 a.m. Monday with a traditional bringing in of the embers for the barbecue pit.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The restaurant will be able to sell wine and beer.

The chain operates more than 170 restaurants in the United States. The nearest one is in Orland Park.

For information, call 708-423-5546 or visit Famous Dave’s online.

Hibachi Grill Opens in Orland Park

Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffet opened last week at 7260 W. 159th St. in Orland Park in the Home Depot plaza.

The restaurant, which features Chinese, Japanese and American cuisine, is the third buffet for owner Jacky Chen. He also owns locations in Matteson and Forest Park.

“Business has very good, so far,” said Chen.

Hours are Monday to Thursday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

For buffet prices and information, call the restaurant at 708-802-8989.

Hostess outlet stores close

Even in the likely event that someone comes along and buys the rights and recipes to keep making and selling Hostess Twinkies, Ho-Hos and Cupcakes, gone forever will be the Hostess outlet stores, which used to be paradise for bargain hunters looking to stock up on discounted Wonder bread, fruit pies and boxes of Twinkies and Ding-Dongs.

Employees at Hostess outlet stores in Richton Park and Burbank both said that while the cake line was likely to be acquired as soon as the bankruptcy judge gives the OK this week, their stores would be closed for good by Tuesday at the latest.

“We’re history,” said an employee at the store in Richton Park. “The cake line will be bought up by someone and they’ll still be sold in stores. But we’re done. First it was Sara Lee and now us.”

An employee at the store in Burbank echoed those comments.

“We’re not going to reopen,” she said.

Other Chicago-area stores that will be shutting down this week are located in Hazel Crest, Dolton, Munster, Ind., Bourbonnais and Merrillville, Ind.

Home Run Inn opened last week for carryout orders at its latest location at 10900 S. Western Ave. in Chicago’s Beverly community, and will open for diners this week.

“The grand opening for the dining room will be 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13,” said Jamie Wagner, restaurant marketing manager for Home Run Inn.

The restaurant chain, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, will eventually be open daily for lunch but will have reduced hours when it first opens, she said.

“We’ll be closed on Mondays at the beginning,” she said adding the dining room also would be closed for lunch during the week but would be open starting at noon on weekends.

The ninth location for Home Run Inn will be a little different from most of the other locations, said Wagner.

“We’re getting back to our roots,” she said. “The Beverly location will have an open kitchen concept. There is a lot of brick and woodwork. It has more of a pub look and feel. It’s very inviting.”

The restaurant celebrated its opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 26 attended by company officials, local elected officials and members of the Beverly business community.

The 4,400-square-foot restaurant has been highly anticipated by local residents who have been asking for months on its Facebook page when the Beverly location would finally be open.

For information, call the restaurant at 773-432-9696 or visit Home Run Inn online.

Video 6-Pack: Hollywood’s take on presidential elections

Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman star in "All the President's Men."
By Bob Bong
Southland Savvy

Americans will head to the polls on Tuesday to elect another president.

Either Barack Obama will continue to reside in the White House for four more years or Mitt Romney will try his hand as president.

Whoever wins will have a difficult task of dealing with a massive deficit, terrorism, possible nuclear weapons in Iran and economic uncertainty.

Hollywood has had more than its share of films devoted to the race for president as well as the men who have occupied the White House over the years.

Films about candidates with dark secrets have included the Bruce Willis action film “Red” about a candidate trying to cover up his involvement in a military cover-up. Dustin Hoffman stars as a spin doctor in “Wag the Dog” about a campaign of disinformation and manipulation when a candidate is caught having sex with a minor. Frank Sinatra stars in “The Manchurian Candidate” about a candidate (Laurence Harvey) who is a communist stooge after being brainwashed while a POW during the Korean War.

Fictional presidents have had their share of woes including Michael Douglas as a widowed president trying to do his job, run for re-election and woo a lobbyist in “The American President.” Hal March is a president who has to thwart a military coup in “Seven Days in May.” Kevin Kline portrays both a calculating president who dies while having an affair with a staffer and the good-natured imposter brought in to portray him in “Dave.”

Real-life presidents have had their problems, too. President John Kennedy faces off with the Russians over missiles in Cuba in “13 Days in October.” Before he was president, Dwight Eisenhower has to defeat Nazi Germany in “Ike.”

Presidents have been action stars, such as the gun-toting chief executive portrayed by Harrison Ford in “Air Force One,” while Abraham Lincoln moonlighted as a vampire killer in “Abraham Lincoln Vampire Killer.” Jack Nicholson’s president is chased out of the White House by bloodthirsty aliens in “Mars Attacks!”

Here are six films available on video, DVD, on-demand or streaming that have featured one way or another the campaign for the highest office in the land. Don’t forget to vote on Tuesday.

“All the President’s Men” (1976) – This exceptional film about the two Washington Post reporters who uncover the Watergate scandal is a tribute to old school journalism and, unfortunately, a look at how paranoia brought down a president. Stars include Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, Jack Warden, Martin Balsam, Hal Holbrook, Jason Robards and Jane Alexander.

“Swing Vote” (2008) – A presidential election comes down to a single man’s vote in this political comedy that may be a more accurate observation of the average voter than we want to believe. Stars include Kevin Costner, Paula Patton, Dennis Hopper, Madeline Carroll, Kelsey Grammer and Nathan Lane.

“Primary Colors” (1998) – John Travolta stars as a Bill Clinton-like candidate stumping for the Democratic nomination for president who will stop at nothing to win. Other stars include Emma Thompson, Kathy Bates, Adrian Lester, Billy Bob Thornton, Maura Tierney and Larry Hagman.

“Shampoo” (1975) – The 1968 election between Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey plays in the background for this film about a hair dresser (Warren Beatty) trying to find financing for his own shop while he beds just about every woman he encounters. Other stars include Goldie Hawn, Julie Christie, Lee Grant, Jack Warden and a young Carrie Fisher.

“Man of the Year” (2006) – Robin Williams stars as a Jon Stewart-like television pundit who runs for president and wins because of a computer glitch that the voting technology company will do everything to keep secret in this twisted comedy. Other stars include Laura Linney, Christopher Walken and Lewis Black.

“Head of State” (2003) – A candidate for president dies and his party decides to replace him with a nobody (Chris Rock) in the waning days of the campaign in this comedy. Other stars include Bernie Mac, Dylan Baker, Nick Searcy, Lynn Whitfield and Robin Givens.

Cigar lounge opens in Chicago Heights

By Bob Bong
Southland Savvy

Ron Nesheiwat only has two rules at his new business: Have fun and you have to buy a cigar.

Nesheiwat and his partner George Arambula opened Rojo Cigar Lounge at 101 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights in the former Cigar Store Indian smoke shop in August and say it’s the perfect place for someone who wants to sit back and light one up.

“We can comfortably seat 44,” he said. “We feature premium hand-rolled cigars; no cigarettes and no cheap, smelly cigars.

“People can come in and watch the game, play cards or dominoes, or just talk. We want people who come here to enjoy themselves and the experience. We’re trying to bring back the elegance of cigars.”

“One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people who are buying cigars today are people who didn’t buy cigars before,” he said dispelling the notion that fine cigars are only smoked by mustachioed millionaires in private clubs while swirling brandy in a snifter.

“There are more blacks and Hispanics buying cigars, as well as blue collar workers,” he said. “That’s why I picked this location. We draw from all over the Southeast Suburbs.”

Rojo doesn’t have a liquor or food license, but the lounge is next to the Tender Trap and guests can buy a beverage or meal there and bring it with them into the lounge.

Nesheiwat said he sells only hand-rolled cigars that usually take two years to make it into a cigar lounge humidor.

“I have five shelves about 30 feet long filled with cigars,” he said. “The cheapest is $5 for one of our hand-rolled, flavored cigars. The most expensive cigar I carry is a Padron No. 9 that goes for $22.”

“I’m probably the cheapest cigar lounge around,” he said. “I’m trying to turn a hobby into a lifestyle.”

Regular lounge hours are 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday to Thursday, from 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.

“If there’s a game or something going on, we’ll stay open later,” he said.

For information, call the lounge at 708-300-2040 or visit their Facebook Page.

A website is under construction at www.rojocigarlounge.com.

Dunkin’ Donuts to Replace Nino’s

Nino’s Pizza was torn down recently at 4630 Lincoln Highway in Matteson to make way for a Dunkin’ Donuts shop.

The once popular pizzeria had been closed for some time when it fell victim to the wrecking ball this summer.

Village officials have been working since the spring with Samorma Inc. to bring in the doughnut shop. Samorma operates Dunkin’ Donut and Baskin-Robbins shops in Orland Park and Tinley Park.

The new Dunkin’ Donuts will be about 2,400-square-feet and feature a drive-through lane. A second space of about 2,000 square feet will be available for another tenant in the building.
